We are an interior design studio based in Los Angeles and San Francisco, led by Julia Sobrepeña King.&#38;nbsp;

In our&#38;nbsp; residential and boutique commercial projects we honor craftsmanship, individuality and the innovative spirit of the West Coast.  From chipboard to blue chip, the studio believes in the perfection of imperfection, defining elegance as an expert dash of quirk.

With a career spanning nearly two decades, King received her training from some of the most formidable names in contemporary California design, including AD100 designers Charles De Lisle, Commune Design, Waldo Fernandez, Michael S. Smith and Kelly Wearstler. Some notable projects she has led are remodels of iconic buildings such as John Lautner’s Segel House and the Sea Ranch Lodge. 
The studio was founded in late 2021, and was named a New American Voice by Architectural Digest in 2022.&#38;nbsp; "Roene" is a hybrid of the names of her two grandmothers—one an artist and the other an architect—reflecting their revolutionary spirit and her pride in their creative legacy. &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;

Pacific Heights Fog House&#38;nbsp;


Soft San Francisco fog, spring light, and a quietly offbeat spirit shaped the design of this 1908 shingle-style home in Pacific Heights. Reimagined by Studio Roene for a family of four, the house balances lightness and restraint with unexpected moments of color and pattern. 
The clients had two opposing instincts: one gravitated toward expressive color and graphic Josef Frank florals; the other&#38;nbsp; preferred calm and restraint. The design became a&#38;nbsp; dialogue between their sensibilities— color that feels alive and but never overwhelming; cheerful yet cerebral, and surprising in small doses.
Our concept for the color story was a spring garden seen through San Francisco’s fog—soft, moody, and ethereal hues that wash through the rooms like light silk, punctuated by bold graphic moments that give the house pulse and contrast.

Silverlake Craftsman

A 1911 Craftsman bungalow in Silverlake had been stripped of its character from a recent flip, so our clients, a movie producer and a writer, asked us to bring back some charm. With family roots in Italy, they wanted touches of European glamour while still echoing a laidback California vibe. We leaned into this tension between opposites- combining refined materials with a casual playfulness. Drawing from vintage European design, California artisans, collectible pieces and custom furniture, the home is filled with objects and art that spark conversation.

Mill Valley MidcenturyAnchored by lush redwoods, we remodeled this 1960s home with a simple yet impactful design for a contemporary art curator and her family. Inspired by modernist minimalists such as Corbusier and Judd, we used color and textures derived from nature as a way to define spatial geometry and architecture. Materials such as verdigris, waxed copper, Douglas fir, plywood, concrete, and handmade tile are paired with bold hues and furniture from local and international furniture makers, providing an engaging backdrop for the clients’ evolving art collection.

Spanish PostmodernRooted in 1920s Spanish Revival architecture, this Los Angeles pied à terre was reimagined through the lens of a 1980s art loft. White painted wood floors, walls and trim create a crisp backdrop for sunwashed pastels, sunset tones, and sculptural silhouettes that lend the space a bold, graphic energy. An eclectic mix of furniture styles—Art Deco, Swedish, Postmodern, midcentury, and contemporary—come together to create layered rooms that feel both curated and unconventional.

Noe Valley ModernA contemporary home for a minimalist couple in San Francisco was designed with a restrained floor plan. The clients wanted everything to be functional, light and airy, so we leaned on light wood tones and neutrals, but then punctuated the space with vintage finds and pops of bold color to give it some character.
